The first course of treatment is often drug therapy using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, oral contraceptive pills or hormonal therapy. These drugs may initially reduce tumor size and bleeding in some patients. These medications, however, cannot be taken forever. When they are discontinued, the fibroids will frequently resume growing and symptoms often recur within a few months.
