• Gynecologist Exam
If you are suffering from any of the symptoms that are associated with uterine fibroids, you should consult your gynecologist. Fibroids are diagnosed in a typical gynecological exam, where the gynecologist can feel if the uterus is enlarged. Certain other conditions, however, can cause an enlarged uterus or painful symptoms similar to fibroids. Therefore, a gynecologist often recommends further tests to confirm the presence of fibroids.

  • Imaging Studies
A pelvic ultrasound examination is a painless test using sound waves to detect the size, shape, and location of fibroids. Sometimes a vaginal ultrasound is performed by inserting a probe into the vagina, allowing a clearer image of the uterus and adjacent structures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT scan) are two other painless tests which may be used to provide detailed pictures of the uterus and fibroids.

  • Hysteroscopy
In the case of submucosal fibroids, or ones that are harder to detect with standard imaging tests, a hysteroscopy may be necessary. A thin, lighted instrument is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The gynecologist can see the interior of the uterus, look for fibroids, and take tissue samples. This procedure can be performed in a doctor's office. Because there are different gynecological conditions that can cause similar symptoms, it is important to test accurately to determine whether or not you have fibroids. If fibroids are diagnosed and thought to be a cause of your symptoms, then you can explore your treatment options.
